Don't get scared and rush into filing permanent patent applications in order to "get protection". What are you protecting if the inventive matter has not been qualified? Common sense tells you to qualify marketability first. It's a costly mistake otherwise.

Use provisional patent applications
During development inventions tend to metamorphose. The best way to protect your rights during this period is to keep proper records and file provisional patent applications as required.
When new inventive matter is discovered, you can file additional provisional applications instead of costly permanent ones. It is not uncommon to file two or three provisional applications and then file a single permanent application referencing the three.
Obviously the money and time saved in doing it this way is substantial. That's thousands of dollars and valuable development time that should be spent on development and marketing instead.
The inventor who goes blindly into patenting without qualifying marketability is going to have a painful, costly experience. Learn all you can about inventing and patenting and don't become a statistic.
